Overseas adventure gets under way for students
A group of 25 Degree students from Birmingham College of Food and Tourism are all set for the adventure of a lifetime as they fly off on expeditions in remote locations around the world.
As part of their Adventure Tourism course the students have to plan a twenty five day expedition and this year, for the first time, countries like Madagascar, Nicaragua and Morocco are among their chosen destinations.
The expeditions are based around the students' research projects on different aspects of tourism. For example, teams heading to Morocco will be looking at creating a tour involving surfing, snowboarding, windsurfing and sandboarding.
Two teams going to Madagascar will be assessing the possibilities of tours in remote parts, including a former smuggler's route and in Nicaragua a group will design a tour around volcanic sites.
Adventure Tourism lecturer Richard Fairer said: "There is a growing interest in holidays that offer more than sea and sun and our Adventure Tourism course prepares students for working with adventure and activity based holiday companies. The expedition is an important part of their learning experience."
