Additional Financial Support
As well as receiving assistance through grants, awards and bursaries, some students will also be entitled to receive extra help towards specific living costs through government support - this money will not normally be paid back. Such assistance covers the following:
-
A Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) is available to full and part-time* students to help meet the costs of expenditure such as specialist equipment, travel costs to and from college and, in some cases, non-medical assistance. Further details about this allowance can be found on the government website www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
* Part-time study must be completed in no longer than twice the time taken to complete an equivalent full-time course e.g. a three-year BA programme must be completed within a six-year period.
-
For students with dependent children, a Parents' Learning Allowance and Childcare Grant is available to help meet the cost of childcare. A student who has an adult who depends on them may be entitled to receive an Adult Dependants' Grant .
-
The Access to Learning Fund is available through the College and provides help for students who may need extra financial support during their studies. The fund is used for the following purposes:
-
To meet particular programme and living costs which are not already met from other grants and loans.
-
To help students if they are in financial hardship.
-
To provide emergency payments for unexpected financial crises.
-
To help students who may be considering giving up their programme of study because of financial problems.
-
The College calculates the amount of assistance to be given via its Student Services Unit based upon the particular circumstances of individual students.
