Adventure Tourism Management MA / PG Diploma
The market for activity based tourism is growing rapidly. This one year programme links the provision, management and philosophy of outdoor activities and controlled adventure to the business and management of tourism related activities. Former students are employed with tour operators, activity centres and in education. Although focused on the adventure tourism industry, the business management skills and techniques developed in this programme also have relevance to many public and private sector enterprises operating in alternative service sector industries.
The College's School of Recreation, Sport and Tourism is a leading provider of innovative undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in adventure tourism, being one of the first institutions in Europe to develop tourism programme with this particular focus. With a national and international reputation the School enjoys well-developed international links, reflected in a thriving international student body, which contributes greatly to the cultural diversity and cosmopolitan atmosphere of the College.
The programme aims to enhance individual business management potential by developing knowledge and skills in the analysis of change and in problem solving in order to increase the ability to make, implement and evaluate decisions at both operational and strategic levels. A strong emphasis is placed upon the role of risk assessment and creative communication in effective management practice, together with an awareness of contemporary issues affecting the growing adventure tourism market. The opportunity to pursue specific research interests is provided through the completion of a dissertation for the Masters award.
A key feature of the programme is the live industry project (Adventure Tourism Planning module), undertaken overseas during the programme for an external organisation, the undertaking of which involves students directly applying skills and knowledge developed in the programme. Previous students have focused specifically on the development of adventure activities in the Azores (Portugal) in conjunction with Whalewatch Azores.
