The final HLTA programme at UCB will be running in November 2011:

Dates are:

  • Day One Mon 28th November 2011

  • Day Three Fri 27th January 2012

The deadline for applications will be Friday 18th November 2011.

If you are considering HLTA status please look at the TDA Handbook.  It will help familiarise you with the HLTA process and provides examples of evidence you may wish to examine before and during the application process for HLTA status.

Teaching Assistants who wish to find out more about HLTA in general, are advised to visit the National HLTA website.

Schools who wish to find out more about the benefits a HLTA can bring are advised to read the General Information for Schools.

HLTA Preparation for Assessment

HLTA preparation consists of three one-day sessions, during which candidates are prepared for an assessment visit and learn how they can demonstrate that they meet all of the HLTA professional standards through writing up assessment tasks.  Please note, observation of teaching does not form any part of the formal assessment process.

Since 2010, the TDA no longer provide local authorities with a grant to cover the costs of HLTA preparation.  Costs have to be met by the school or the individual and we are currently charging £350 per candidate for the course.

The cost of preparation does not include the assessment element.  For further information on assessment costs, you are advised to contact your Regional Provider of Assessment (RPA) which for Birmingham is www.bestpracticenet.co.uk

The 3 Day Preparation Route is designed for Teaching Assistants who are able to show they meet all of the standards, who are currently working as a Level 3 Teaching Assistant and who hold a nationally recognised qualification at Level 2 for Literacy and Numeracy.

The entry criteria prior to attendance on any core training programme requires all applicants to have:

Achieved Standard 11 Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 qualification eqivalent to the National Qualification Framework (N.B. you will have to provide copies of certificates along with the application form, as well as original certificates as part of the HLTA programme).

A recognised Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification as defined in the Single Status for Schools - Support Staff Employment Package, June 2009 (copy of certificate required).
