College support inspires decision to stay on for degree

Alex actually started his journey with us as a bakery student seven years ago before realising his true calling. Completing a health and social care college course with us, he is now on his way to becoming a fully-fledged nurse.

"I am so glad I made the swap," he said. "As soon as I started my health and social care course, I knew what I wanted to do."

He said nursing had held great appeal from a young age. "I felt the world needed more kindness and I always enjoyed medicine and playing doctor as a child," he said. "Also, teaching is a big passion and something I wish to pursue with nursing. Education and promoting the health of our country is so important!"

But why did he choose to stay on at University College Birmingham instead of going to another university?

"I had a few ideas for universities, but was interested in the smaller class sizes here and I really did not want to move away from Birmingham," he said. "The hours were flexible and the teaching was over three days a week, not five, so worked great for me.

"But mostly, the support I had during college affirmed my wish to stay on and I still feel this continued support now.

"If students in college are looking to continue on, I would simply tell them this. If you are looking for an inclusive, diverse, supportive, award-winning university which wants to see you thrive, there is no other place you want to be but University College Birmingham."

Placements and events beyond study have been a highlight for Alex, including an award-winning placement at Solihull hospital. "The placement team finds and allocates wonderful placements and they are so supportive if you rarely do not enjoy one," he said.

"And Welcomefest and events held here are a joy to attend and I am always warmed to see so many faces!"
