Supporting your success
We are delighted you have chosen to study at University College Birmingham. We offer lots of support for college students to enable you to achieve your potential.
Support is flexible, student-centred and personalised to meet students’ preferences and needs. Our excellent support services include the Academic Skills Centre, HIRED and Health and Wellbeing.
Support for students who disclose a disability, health condition or mental health condition starts from application. Upon application, you will be contacted by a member of the Disability Support team to discuss your specific needs and additional support requirements.

Additional support for student with disabilities
Transition support
Transition support is available for students with high needs, and students that disclose autism or anxiety. You will be invited to a transition event if you would find transition into a mainstream college environment particularly stressful or challenging.
In class support
In class support is provided by our team of Academic Support Workers (ASWs). Support can be provided within any learning environment within University College Birmingham to students that have evidence of a specific need. This includes practical, theory, maths and English lessons. Reviews of support are completed to discuss the support you receive, the impact of the support and any required changes, to either decrease or amend the existing support.
All students that disclose an additional need and enrol with us have a Learning Support Plan (LSP) created, based on the information provided and discussions during interview and enrolment. These include an overview of your needs, strategies for teaching and support and differentiation required.
Academic Skills Centre (ASC)
All students are entitled to one hour per week of one-to-one or small group support with an ASW, led by the student. You decide what you would like support within their session, whether this be help with an assignment, revision for exams or help with research or referencing. Students with high needs may be entitled to increased support in the ASC. Find out more here.
Personal tutor
All learners have a personal tutor as a first point of contact. You will have group tutorials each week and regular one-to-one tutorials with your personal tutor.
Students with high needs and EHCPs
We access several external support services depending on individual needs and support requirements, including BSL interpreting, Teachers of the Deaf, support from the sensory (hearing and vision) support team, autism mentoring from the Communication and Autism Team (CAT) and dyslexia tuition.
EHCP reviews are completed annually, with the student at the centre of the process, where any necessary support and Preparing for Adulthood Outcomes can be discussed by professionals surrounding the student.
Health and wellbeing support
Our Health and Wellbeing team offers a confidential service committed to helping students access the most appropriate support and information. Services include nurse and medical services, counselling, mental health and wellbeing support and mentoring.
HIRED
You can access support from HIRED to find employment, placements, internships and voluntary work through links with industry. HIRED continues to support students after they complete their course and to encourage them to take an active part in their communities.
